Pet Food Drive for Meals on Wheels’ Wags for Wheels Program Unites Massillon and McKinley Communities

McKinley Edges Massillon for the Donation Win

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Stark County, OH (October 22, 2023): The rivalry between Washington Massillon and Canton McKinley High Schools reached new heights as the communities came together in a spirited donation drive for Meals On Wheels of Northeast Ohio’s Wags for Wheels program. From September 29 to October 19, 2023, the Massillon Tigers and the Canton McKinley Bulldogs competed to collect cat and dog food goods respectively, aiming to support seniors in need and their beloved pets in the Battle of the Mascots.

The pet food drive, a first-of-its-kind collaboration, witnessed overwhelming support from both communities. Hundreds of generous individuals contributed to this cause, making a significant difference in the lives of the elderly and their animal companions. These donations will be channeled into Meals On Wheels NEO’s Wags for Wheels program, ensuring seniors can keep their pets by their side, enhancing their well-being and happiness.

“This collaborative effort not only showcased the friendly rivalry between the schools but also highlighted the compassion and generosity of our residents,” said VANTAGE Aging CEO Kim Ventresca. “With these donations, we can continue providing vital support to our community’s most vulnerable members.”

The winner of this heartwarming competition was determined by the volume of donations received. In less than three weeks, the communities came together to restock the Wheels for Wags shelves with 714 items for our vulnerable seniors and their pets.  In the comeback of the year, McKinley, once down but not out, emerged victorious over Massillon 359 to 355.  We look forward to growing the Battle of the Mascots next year into one even more worthy of this fantastic rivalry!

The official announcement of the winner took place during halftime at the Massillon-McKinley football game on October 21, 2023, at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium. The atmosphere was electric as the communities gathered to celebrate the collective effort and generosity that made this competition a resounding success.

VANTAGE Aging expresses heartfelt gratitude to all participants, volunteers, and supporters who made this initiative possible. Your kindness has made a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most, fostering a sense of unity and compassion within our community.
