Connecting Seniors During COVID-19

Right now, it’s best that we keep our distance to avoid the spread of the coronavirus. But, social distancing can leave many feeling isolated and alone. This is especially true for seniors, who are at higher risk of complications from COVID-19.

VANTAGE Aging’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) is helping to empower and connect seniors during these difficult times. By matching seniors across seven Ohio counties, our aging community members are reminded that they are not alone.

Telecare safely connects seniors

As RSVP has newly expanded to Hamilton County, we have prioritized our efforts to help where the greatest need has been. We determined that so many seniors are living in social isolation due to COVID-19 and with holidays quickly approaching, that number will increasingly grow.

As part of RSVP, our TeleCare Program provides a simple check-in and/or friendly phone call by RSVP volunteers to area seniors. This program targets our most vulnerable and needy population i.e., the elderly and those seniors with disabilities who are trying to “age in place” and remain as independent as possible at home.

Gloria and Dee’s Telecare experience

Hamilton County’s first client/volunteer assignment between Gloria and Dee has been a success. RSVP volunteer Dee said, “I really enjoy being able to engage in meaningful conversations with Gloria and I hope she feels likewise.”

Their Saturday chats give Gloria something to look forward to. Gloria and Dee are both avid readers and have exchanged book recommendations.

How to get involved

This volunteer opportunity for those 55 years and older can be done safely from home. To sign up to volunteer, visit RSVP online, or contact lmascellino@vantageaging.org.

If you know of a senior living in Hamilton, Delaware, Franklin, Geauga, Medina, Summit, or Wayne Counties who would benefit from the TeleCare call Program, please have them enroll by visiting our online referral page.
