Breaking the Stigma of SNAP

Let’s face it, stigmas can often deter us from things before we take the time to understand them. For this reason, we sometimes miss out on valuable experiences and resources.

One great example of this is SNAP food assistance. SNAP can be extremely helpful to many older adults. Yet, there is still a stigma sometimes associated with receiving this benefit.

At VANTAGE, we teamed up with the Summit County Department of Job and Family Services to break the stigma of SNAP. Our goal is to ensure everyone is aware of the program and, if eligible, getting the benefits they are entitled to.

Not a Summit County resident? The SNAP program is available in every Ohio county. The same rules apply to all Ohioans. After reading this, you can contact your local Department of Job and Family Services to learn more about SNAP and get enrolled.

What is SNAP?

SNAP stands for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It is the country’s largest federal nutrition program to help low-income individuals and families. The goal of SNAP is to improved food security and nutrition among low-income households.

The SNAP program is funded by the National Council on Aging. Eligible individuals can apply through their Department of Job and Family Services.

Once enrolled, you receive your SNAP benefits on a card that works like a debit card. You can only by food items at participating stores and some items are disqualified. For example, you cannot by prepared hoot foods that will be eaten immediately. You also cannot purchase alcohol, tobacco, non-food items, or pet food.

SNAP benefits give you access to healthy food options. You can use the card to buy fresh produce and grocery items. You can also use your SNAP benefits to purchase foods at participating farmers’ markets.

Breaking the Stigma of SNAP

You might remember SNAP as “food stamps”. While there are some negative stigmas about food assistance, shopping with SNAP is easy, convenient, and beneficial to all members of our community.

If you are eligible to receive SNAP, take advantage of the resource – that’s what it’s there for! Here are key facts about SNAP that can break the stigma:

SNAP is not a charity

Like Social Security and Medicare, you pay into it, so it’s there when you need it.

SNAP is not embarrassing

The old “food stamps” no longer exist. Each month, SNAP dollars load automatically onto a debit card that you can use at most grocery stores

SNAP helps the economy

SNAP benefits are spent in local grocery stores, supporting local retailers and creating jobs.

There’s more than enough to go around

Enrolling in SNAP never means taking SNAP benefits away from someone else

It’s okay to get resources that make your life easier

Most resources, including your home, car, bank accounts, and life insurance policies don’t make you ineligible for SNAP.

Expenses count to help you get more

Your monthly benefit is calculated based on shelter, utilities, medical, and other expenses.
