What is the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP)?

The Senior Community Service Employment Program, or SCSEP, offers paid job training and placement to low-income adults age 55 and older. Participants work up to 20 hours per week and earn the current minimum wage. Because the goal is to get people hired into unsubsidized work outside of the program, participants receive individual job search assistance and frequent check-ins from our professional staff.

What are the requirements to be enrolled?

You must be:

  • 55 years old or older
  • Unemployed and looking for a job
  • Living in one of the 38 Ohio counties we serve (see map) OR
  • Living in one of the 37 Indiana counties we serve (View Map)
What kinds of assignments are available?

Job training can take place at a community based or government agency. Assignments are based on the current needs of the workforce and the participant’s skillsets and interests. Common assignments include office administration, health and social services, food service, customer service, and facility management.

What are the benefits of enrolling in SCSEP?

How is SCSEP funded?

SCSEP is funded by the U.S. Department of Labor through the Older Americans Act, Ohio Department of Aging, and Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

How do I get started?

Call our office at 330-253-4597, or toll-free 1-800-554-5335, and speak to one of our office participants who can give you more information about the program. They will ask you some questions about your previous work history, your skills and abilities, and your current source of income. This information will allow us to see if you are eligible for the program.

Can I participate in SCSEP and still be eligible for food stamps and federal housing?

According to the Older Americans Act Amendment of 2000, Title V funds do not count as income when determining eligibility for subsidized housing and/or food stamps. Please reference the statement below:

Employment Assistance and Federal Housing and Food Stamp Programs

“Funds received by eligible individuals from projects carried out under the program established in this title shall not be considered to be income of such individuals for purposes of determining eligibility of such individuals, or of any other persons, to participate in any housing program for which Federal funds may be available or for any income determination under the Food Stamp Act of 1977.”
